Education Dialogue

Call for Proposals: Panels, Papers and/or Projects
Deadline for initial submissions: June 1, 2008, with decisions
issued by September.
The Education Dialogue was formally created in 2000. Its mission is to foster open dialogue about the state of metals education today as well as the needs and issues for the future. The Education Dialogue aims to include and engage all those involved in the preservation and propagation of the disciplines encompassed by the term "Metalsmithing" as it is applied in academia.
Submissions for panels, papers and projects can address (but not be limited to) the following topical areas:
* Survey of the current state of metals programs.
* Curriculums: knowledge & practice, process and
material.
* Technology, cybernetic, digital, and electronic
revolution.
* Teaching the history of metalsmithing.
* Revolution of professionalism....teaching professional
practices.
* Curricula of today vs future curricula.
* Role of fine arts & design & its effects in
developing metals curricula; designer culture vs fine arts
culture.
* The culture of craft in today's academia: "Metalsmithing's"
academic identity.
* The future of inter / multi / cross disciplinary approaches:
successes and failures.
* The "one person" program and implementing change.
* Art major vs metals/jewelry major programs.....curricula
choices.
* BFA vs the MFA : what's the difference?
* MFA in Metals programs; developing standards.
* Termination of metals programs: who, when, where, &
why.
* Preemptive strategies to educate administrations and ensure a
program's future.
* The PhD in Studio Art.
* The role of SNAG in academia.
* The role of Metalsmith in academia.
* Defining the revolution in metals: how are we relevant?
* Who are we now...who will we be in 20 years..."seeding" the
future.
Proposals: Initial submissions should be an abstract not to
exceed 2 pages in MS WORD.
Proposals may be structured to fit into 1, 2 or 3 hour
segments.
Presentation times should allow for Q+A
The ED is scheduled for a total time of 3 hours.
All submissions must include contributor(s) name, affiliation,
contact information, and resume.
Proposals for panel discussions should include names of
panelists.
