Juan Alejandro Fried Ortiz de Zarate is an architect and artist whose work reflects the diversity of his ancestry, his urban experiences, and a new home in the country. Juan studied art history and architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota. As an architect and urban designer, he completed award-winning designs for public agencies and community groups. As an emerging artist, he continues his study - on a more intimate and personal scale - of form, space, and materials.
As an architect (under the name John Fried, and in collaboration with several design firms), his work received national and international design awards and has been featured in various publications including: Process + Projects; Terror and Wonder: Architecture in a Tumultuous Age; Chicago Architects: A Genealogy; Architect; Progressive Architecture; designguide.com; archiplanet.org; and architectureexposed.com.
He started forging and fusing his geometric, architectonic work in the winter of 2014, and now is a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths; a recently invited Klimt02 Jeweller; has been published in the 2015/2016 Anuario de Joyería Contemporánea and Arte and Joya journal; and has exhibited in Minnesota as well as at the 2015 Joya Barcelona Fair, the 2015 MadridJoya Fair, at the upcoming 2016 Kyoob exhibitions at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Seton Hill University, and at the Contemporary Craft Satellite Gallery in Pittsburg, PA in 2017
