CAPSTONE: Nora Atkinson
Notes on Wonder
Saturday, May 23 | 11:15 am | Liberty Ballrooms C&D (Ballroom Level)
The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) is pleased to announce Nora Atkinson as the Capstone Speaker for its 49th Annual SNAG Conference. Atkinson’s talk will focus on the importance of human connection as an historical thread that continues into the future of art and craft, and will bookend an opening presentation by conference Keynote, Cannupa Hanska Luger to bring the 2020 SNAG Conference, “Grit to Gold: Future Fifty” to a close.
As the Renwick Gallery approaches its 50th Anniversary, Curator-in-Charge Nora Atkinson reflects on the future of craft and the state of the field over the past several years, since the Renwick Gallery’s groundbreaking WONDER exhibition, addressing what makes craft important in the media-saturated contemporary world.
Nora Atkinson is the Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator-in-Charge of the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum. Named Washingtonian Magazine’s 2018 “Best Boundary-Pushing Curator” for her work on No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man (2018) and Murder Is Her Hobby (2017), she has curated four original exhibitions and authored two publications since joining the museum.
Previously, Atkinson was curator at Bellevue Arts Museum, Wash., where she produced nine original exhibitions. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, and is a 2018 graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s executive leadership program.
