Biography

I explore the use of fantasy settings to manifest will into the universe. By constructing interactive objects, I allow the user to voice their internal desires through sound and movement to gain favor with universal forces. I dip into the ideas of ritual, religion, and magic to explore contemporary concerns. Exploring these topics through a fantasy setting allows me to subvert the initial expectations of the viewer and hide their meanings within the sculptural form.

Creating these objects by hand allows me to explore the mind body connection that occurs when users interact with my objects. Using metal and wood allows me to explore this interaction in ways that are both traditional and contemporary, as this blending creates new forms that have familiar echoes. I wish for my users to be curious and excited to pick up and investigate the intricacies of each piece, as this interaction is what completes the connection between artist and viewer.

Phil Ambrose is a native of Eastern North Carolina who, after many stops and starts, pursued
his BFA in Metals from East Carolina University. His time there helped him develop a love of
found object and mixed media art. He is currently pursuing his MFA in Jewelry and Metals at
Edinboro University. His current studies have allowed for the exploration of new ways to
incorporate new materials into his work, as well as exploring concepts that include fantasy,
personal identity, and politics.
