Résumé

Although place is universally understood as an intimate space, my work draws attention to how place can be felt both physically and psychologically. Materials such as ceramics and wood challenge the traditional approach to jewelry, where the materials are metal. Each story is inscribed with identity, creating permanent recollections through subjective encounters. As each story is written, repetition serves as a tool to promote awareness of subconscious thoughts, ultimately introducing healing. Each story is personal, but is an open conversation, allowing the audience to reflect on their own life.

Dierra Jones utilizes storytelling and place as the driving force in her studio practice. The medium of jewelry is transformed resulting in delicate, small-scale, wearable objects and non-traditional installation works, containing her identity and emotions. She uses her practice as a method to achieve freedom and control from her past experiences, reflecting a keen eye for autobiography, processing her life stories through a variety of perspectives. Jones’s ability to create engaging and thoughtful works causes each story to be a continual, encouraging reflection and transformation within the viewer.

Dierra is from Petersburg, Virginia, where she studied and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Virginia State University. She also holds a M.F.A. in Jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Savannah, GA. Jones is an artist working and living in Savannah, GA.
