Résumé

Contemporary jewelry allows conceptual art the possibility of intimate yet public expression in relation to the human body.  We are at a cultural and historical crossroads, where great changes are taking place regarding our ways of living, thinking and even expression of ideas.  To me, it seems that this is a moment in which we should actively consider and debate the social constructions imposed historically as absolute truths in our societies.  Jewelry, with its cultural baggage, historical marriage to finite resources, and direct relationship to the body, is the most immediate medium with which to question these “truths.”  My recent jewelry arises from a desire to critique the accepted value of immortal over renewable resources, and the value, fear, and general expectations of society regarding individuals based on preconceived ideas.  By using a variety of materials and techniques, from traditional rawhide braiding to painting with fingernail polish, I look search for ways to make abstract ideas materialize into a tangible thing.

For years I made botanically themed jewelry in precious metals, but when I moved from Dallas, Texas, to a farm in the mountains of western Argentina in 2009, my life and work experienced a sudden shock.  Once the dust had settled, I went back to my roots in contemporary art and interests in conservation, craft, and social change, and began making contemporary jewelry.  I participate regionally and internationally individually and as part of a collective, Caracu.
