Profile picture of Karin Jones

I draw inspiration from historic crafts, from metalwork to fashion and textiles, as well as from observing the world around me. I love to immerse myself in the process of making, and the calm it brings me helps me to reflect on various aspects of society, the natural world, and myself. In an increasingly digitized world, the handmade can act as a grounding force, bringing us back to the materiality of life, and the wonder of creating complex forms using only a few simple tools and materials, our hands, and our imaginations.

I was born and raised in Vancouver, BC, and received a diploma in Jewellery Art and Design from Vancouver, Community College in 1993. In 1995-96 I apprenticed under Master Goldsmiths Heinz and Hermann Laatzen in Hamburg, Germany. Since then I have worked as a goldsmith and designer at jewellery stores in Vancouver, created a line of silver and enamel jewellery, and perfected my own method of Damascene inlay, an age-old technique for inlaying silver and gold on steel. My work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, Finland, Korea, and Japan. I received an MFA from NSCAD University in Halifax in April 2018. I have been teaching at Vancouver Community College, where I am department head of Jewellery Art & Design, since 2013.
