Metalwork came by accident for me; the moment I held the torch and the flame erupted I was enthralled.  I approach my work not as jeweler, but as an artist who sculpts metal.

I choose to create by hand fabrication and thrive in an atmosphere of controlled chaos. I look for tension by disturbing symmetry and revealing unrecognizable shapes while visible and imagined boundaries show themselves.

I am pushed by the response of the metal to heat from fire, the results of which compel me to shape the metal beyond its limitations. The metal becomes flexible and open to the addition of other materials, which creates a result not determined beforehand.

I find inspiration in architecture and ruins and believe that experimentation and risk are the only true ways to discovery.

My attitude towards life, just like my art, is decidedly non-conformist.

Prior to metalwork, Jill Herlands was in A&R in the music industry.  Some of Jill’s work now is influenced by the big and bold jewels the musicians wore back then.  She left the industry to raise her daughter and in 2014, decided to find a hobby.  Jill had a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together and she decided to learn how to solder to advance this hobby.

As soon as she picked up the torch, she felt an instantaneous connection to the flame.

Jill is a self-taught jewelry artist, who believes that being called a designer is a misnomer – a designer designs, and an artist creates.

Jill’s work has been recognized with awards such as the Applied Art/Contemporary Craft category at Baby Forest, as well as an Honorary Mention at ‘Fun House 18’ Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY.
