Claudia Hug – Goldsmith and Silversmith

Born in the US and raised in Switzerland, Claudia Hug grew up with a suitcase in one hand and a passport in the other. For more than 9 years she traveled the world, and it was during her stays in places such as Greece, Kenya and India that she discovered her passion for making jewelry, and began studying gold and silversmithing. In 1983 Claudia returned to Switzerland to refine her skills, working as an apprentice with Max Frei, a 1933 graduate of Zurich’s College of Art and Design during the famous Bauhaus period. Influenced by Max Frei’s old-world gold and silversmithing techniques and his abstract and aesthetic sense of reduction design of jewelry and objets d’art, she began to handcraft her own unique and eclectic creations. Recently she has moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to set up her workshop, and it is there she designs and makes her creations, bold statements of timeless elegance in a style easily recognized as uniquely her own. Each piece she creates is hand-forged, formed and shaped by hand.
