Pin mechanisms and brooch back design
April 20-22, 2020 in San Diego, CA

In the field of contemporary jewelry the brooch is a beloved classic. One of the challenges of making a good brooch is to find an artful solution for the pin which connects the piece securely to the wearer. Far from being merely a functional, invisible part of the backside, the pin should contribute to the aesthetic value of the piece and it deserves to be developed with equal importance. This workshop guides you through a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and pin. You will be introduced to a variety of pin mechanisms and guided through exercises. We will then delve into realizing them technically. You will learn how to integrate the brooch back and the pin mechanism into the whole creative process, thereby enhancing the aesthetic value and design impact of the piece. The overall goal of this workshop is to teach you technical skills that are rooted in a new way of thinking: a holistic approach to the brooch.

Daniela Malev is an author, German-trained goldsmith and professor, with an international following and popular book "To The Point" on brooch back design. She travels and teaches workshops worldwide, most recently in Brazil, Israel, and Italy. Her 5-stop US tour is sold out except here at Anneville, her newest addition.
